Cyprus Youth TO-GEt-THERe, a Youth Power Small Grants project (11.06.2012)

Responding to the need for mainstream inter-communal dialogue and pan-Cypriot cooperation mechanisms on all levels of society, particularly among young people, the Famagusta youth centre, Magusa Genclik Merkezi (MAGEM) and Cultural Movement of Limassol EPILOGI have designed a number of joint inter-communal activities to be realized between May and August 2012. The activities include intercultural youth festivals, youth camps in rural areas, painting and photo sessions together with exhibitions, the creation of a traditional food catalogue and many opportunities for young people to come together in Limassol, Famagusta and Omodos. The aim is to enable the youth living in Cyprus to become a positive force that will develop a culture of reconciliation and ultimately transform Cypriot society, through their engagement in common creative activities.


Activity 1: Intercultural Dialogue Night Festival “Musical Footprints” – “One city for all” in Limassol (20 May, 2012) with food bazaar and youth music bands, organized in cooperation with 20 NGOs representing migrant communities living in Cyprus.


Activity 2: “Tasting Cyprus” a food catalogue (May – July, 2012) – collection of traditional recipes from both Cypriot communities, published as a brochure in Greek and Turkish. Young people from both communities work in pairs, one Greek Cypriot and one Turkish Cypriot, to put together recipes of Cypriot cuisine, prepare food and produce the catalogue. 


Activity 3: “Cyprus through the lenses of its Youth” (June – July, 2012) – photo making activity, motivating young people to take document the common social problems in their communities. The photos are to be exhibited together with paintings (activity bellow) and uploaded on social media platforms through the creation of a bi-communal FB group.


Activity 4: 5-day Painting Youth Camp in the village of Omodos open to 20 participants from both communities (11 – 15, July), featuring workshops by specialized trainers, visits to cultural sites and open-door activities. The participants are to produce a series of paintings and the Exhibition will be officially launched at the end of the program, together with intercultural music contest. The works will be exhibited in Omodos (15 – 22 July, 2012) and Famagusta (22 – 29 July, 2012).


Activity 5: Intercultural Youth Festival, taking place in Famagusta (29 July, 2012) with food bazaar and youth bands, a counterpart to the “Musical Footprints” in Limassol.


Activity 6: 2-day follow up and evaluation weekend meeting in campsite in Karpasia/Karpaz open to 10 participants from both communities. (25 – 26 August, 2012).
